Keriocean Studio Poppet Pillows

Poppet Pillows

Handmade in Canmore

A Poppet Pillow is a stuffed figurine that can be used as a decoration or as a source of reflection, guidance, and comfort.  The earliest known poppet is 40,000 years old and is known as the “Lion Man”. It was found in Germany.

These "Poppet Pillows" are created out of inspiration and love.  I draw them out and then digitize them so that they can come to life with my embroidery machine.

The moon gazing hare have a long history as a scared animal crossing religion and cultures for thousands of years all over the world. From a Cree legend telling the story of how the crane got its long legs and the red mark it wears upon its head, in Egypt hares were the messengers for the female moon deity, in Buddhist lore the likeness of the hare on the face of the moon is to honor the virtue of kindness; and that is just the beginning. There are more folklore stories and beliefs that can be found around the world. Thus, my moon gazing hare, Flopsy, an animal effigy, was born. Flopsy imbues the belief that hares would bring growth, re-birth, abundance, new beginnings, and fortune. So, as we enter the Year of the Hare I wish upon you amazing new beginnings, that your future is filled with happiness in your heart and that this little hare brightens your day.

I wanted to create a poppet that gives me all the feelings that I experience when I am in my garden. I give you Flora. Flora in Roman and Greek religions is the goddess of the flowering plants from around 238 B.C.E. Flora was associated with vegetation and flowering plants. The Romans honored her in order to ensure her continued blessing on their lands. This was crucial for an ancient people dependent on agriculture. With the sun embroidered onto Flora's chest I represent life-giving abundance with its warmth radiating healing and peace. With the flowers at her feet I represent rebirth, joy and pleasure.

Heket – In upper and lower Egypt around 3150 BC a cult was started to worship the Goddess Heqet. Heqet is a goddess of fertility represented in the form of a frog. As a fertility goddess, Heqet is associated explicitly with the last stages of the flooding of the Nile, and so with the germination of corn, she became associated with the final stages of childbirth. It is through this image that my Poppet Pillow Heket was birthed. With a giant spiral on her abdomen representing the spiritual development of humans and the birthing of ideas. A large bosom to nourish our souls. Her shape resembles that of a frog sitting symbolizing transformation, fertility, purity, and prosperity for our future days.

Luna is a Poppet after my own heart. Her shape was inspired by a goddess from the Bronze era (4000 B.C.E) in North Africa. Using the symbols of the Moon and the Triskelion (triple spiral) to represent the rhythm of time, and the cycles of our lives. Mother, Maiden, Crone. This movement of time presents the ability to move forward and overcome adversity thus making Luna a symbol of strength.

Zeita is my homage to the Cucuteni- Trypillians Culture (which is usually called the “Cucuteni” in Romania and the “Trypillia” culture in Ukraine). The Cucuteni-Trypillian Culture inhabited Eastern Europe 5,400 to 2,700 BCE (The Bronze era). With the intricacy of thread, I have created Zeita to reflect the details in the ceramic figurines found in 1981. Were the markings tattoos? A kind of language? Objects of ceremony? Through findings on different archaeological sites there is evidence that the Cucuteni- Trypillians believed in a kind of sacred numerology, seen through repeated patterns on figurines. Due to the incredible number of feminine figurines that have been found, some scholars believe that the Cucuteni-Trypillians were a feminine-led, pacifistic society that survived through skillful trade.
