Djembes, Drum Builders & Rain
Well we are officially back.  It's been 6 years since we have travelled to Bali to see our drum builders.  It was a great trip with so many new possibilities.  We talked about the changing weather and the impact that it is having on the drums.  As the rainy season increases in length (trust me we were caught in a few storms and you are thoroughly soaked in minutes) the time needed to dry a drum so that it does not crack when it comes to Canada increases. Frustrating for sure but to see their dedication to an excellent drum it seems worth the wait. As we are always striving to ensure the best quality, legal wood and fair trade it was wonderful to reconnect in person with Adek and YaYa.  There are bigger companies in Indonesia making drums but over many years we have come to realize a few things.  One, to have drum builders who are also players is very important.  Two,  when you are dealing with a smaller organization you know where the money goes as we have met the brother, the sister, the wife and so on.  It really is a family business just like ours.  Third, Indonesia as well as other places in the world are running out of forest.  In many places just like animals, trees are now being poached.  Our drum builders as well as OWD don't feel this is right so we only purchase legally farmed wood to try and stop the selling of poached wood.  A new container of drums will be making their journey soon.  Check out the whole email.  It has some great photo's as well as some information for some upcoming events such as World Beat Classes , DRUM DAY 2012 & THE BIG BEAT.

May the Rhythm be with you

Nepalese Singing Bowls
Also known as Tibetan Singing Bowls, rin gongs, Himalayan bowls or suzu gongs. Singing bowls are used worldwide for meditation, music, relaxation, personal well-being. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound characterized by a fundamental frequency (first harmonic) and usually two audible harmonic overtones (second and third harmonic). According to singing bowl researcher Joseph Feinstein, singing bowls were traditionally used in Asia and the tradition of making sound with bronze bowls could go back 3,000 or more years to the bronze age.

Tingsha
Tingshas are two circular, metal discs held together by a cord. To play the tingshas, hold one side at the bottom of the leather strap in the center of the tingsha and strike the other side at a 90 degree angle. Allow the sound to resonate until it comes to its natural end. Tingshas are often used at the beginning of meditation or a round of chanting, and again at the end. Tingshas have also been used, like Singing Bowls, in sound healing, and in fengshui tingshas are used to clear the room of negative energy. It is believed that the sound of tingshas will ward off evil.
